DEBUNKING A "GETTING OLD MYTH"
FICTION: Since its inception as a field of rational scientific study, medicine has accepted the degeneration of brain function in elderly people as a 'natural occurrence'.
FICTION: This deterioration was thoroughly documented with “hard” findings–as we age, our brains shrink, grow lighter, and lose millions of neurons every year. We have our full complement of neurons by age 2, and by age 30, the number starts to decline. The loss of any single brain cell is permanent, since neurons do not regenerate.
FICTION: On the basis of this well-known fact, brain decline seemed to be scientifically valid; sadly but inevitably, to grow old must lead to memory loss, decreases reasoning ability, impaired intelligence, and related symptoms.
These time-honored assumptions, however, have now been shown to be wrong...
FACT: Careful study of healthy elderly people has revealed that 80 percent of healthy Americans, barring psychological distress (such as loneliness, depression, or lack of outside stimulation), suffer no significant memory loss as they age.
FACT: The secret depends on habits of mind, not the circuitry in the nervous system. As long as a person stays mentally positive and active, they will remain as intelligent as in youth and middle age.
Hello my friends! I am sharing a remarkable "Centenarian" hero of mine.
Bernando LaPallo
A Raw Foodist and More Who Just Celebrated His 110th Birthday in August 2011!

Plus A Must Read:
Bernando's amazing book filled with ways to:
"Age Less and Live More"

Still Dancin' at 110
MESA, Ariz. - On August 17, 2011, Bernando LaPallo turned 110 years old! This Mesa resident lives on his own, still drives and walks around just fine - it's incredible, so I asked him to share some of his secrets.
Bernando eats primarily raw fruits, veggies and fish. Meat is a treat only once a year.
"This is my lifesaver, it keeps me alive..superfood..plus I take it everyday since 1979 - I never miss." said LaPallo.
He believes his clean lifestyle is why he's still alive.
"Well, I don't think I know that eating it's what you eat, you've heard people say you are what you eat, well you are."
Bernando reads daily, walks a mile and a half as soon as he gets up and his favorite product to use on his skin is olive oil.
Extra virgin olive oil for his skin is an age old secret he's practiced for years.
His faith is his foundation and his father his role model.
At 110, he's a popular man. He consults people who are trying to change their life for the better and makes speeches around the country. He's written one book, Age Less and Live More and is working on a second. His phone never stops ringing.
"I get calls from all over..Miami, Italy..I'm on TV in South America."
I asked him if he thinks about his final days.
"I never gave dying any though. I still don't. I know I've got to die. Everybody dies." said Bernando.
So what's next for a man who's lived over a century?
He wants to open a restaurant here in the valley with raw foods on one side and healthy American food on the other. But on his birthday, he's going to take a break from his busy days and celebrate another year of life.
Bernando's Philosophy
Bernando LaPallo was born in Victoria, Brazil on August 17, 1901 to Mattie Carr and Bernando LaPallo Sr. He moved to the United States and was raised by his father who was a doctor in Philadelphia. His first interest was in food and he went on to study the culinary arts at La Sorbonne in Paris, France graduating in 1928. After years of working as a chef on steam liners and resorts he retired in that profession to pursue an interest in the healing arts. He studied massage at The Swedish Institute in New York City. Later Bernando went on to study and become licensed as a reflexologist and podiatrist at NYU. He completed that course of study at the age of 73. He had a successful private massage practice in New York City for more than 20 years treating people from all walks of life. He currently resides in Arizona where he gives talks on the secrets of his youthful vitality and health. Age Less Live More is his first book. He is currently working on a second.

Bernando's Philosophy: There seems to be a tendency, as we age, to spend more and more time watching, and less time doing. We adopt a favorite chair, placed just so in front of the television set, and feel that there is nothing better than spending our time parked in that familiar spot, not thinking, but just absorbing and being entertained. I’ve never quite understood why this is so-I know it seems natural, but there is nothing natural about it.
It seems a little like the story of the frog: If a frog is dropped in a pot of boiling water, it will immediately jump out. But, if the frog is placed into a pot of cool water, and then the stove is turned on, the water will heat so gradually that the frog will just sit there, happy and oblivious.
The stiffness of old age, and the mental rigidity that can accompany it silently creep up behind us and , like the frog, we remain oblivious…It’s at this point that a person might scratch their head and say, “How did this happen?”
What’s needed is an understanding that we can’t live on autopilot and still have a vital life. There are things that will prevent these scourges of age, but only if we are willing to do something everyday to stop them.

9 Healthy Habits to Live to be 100+
Welcome to Blue Zones!
What if I could tell you how to live another 10 years, as well as look younger and feel younger at every age? Something called the Danish Twin Studies established that less than 25% of how long the average person lives is dictated by genes. In other words, most of how long and how well you live is up to you.
The premise of Blue Zones is: identify the optimal lifestyle of longevity and you have a de facto formula of longevity.
To answer these questions, I teamed up National Geographic and hired the world's best longevity researchers to identify pockets around the world where people are living MEASURABLY better. In these Blue Zones we found people who reach age 100 at rates 10 times greater than in the United States, where people suffer a fraction of the rate of heart disease and cancer than we do and where people are getting the extra 10 years that we're missing.
Dan Buettner on Blue Zones, Purpose and Longevity
"A useless life is an Early Death" -Goethe

The quote by the legendary German writer and philosopher was made in the early 19th century, but new research shows that he may have been onto something. A 2005 study that followed 12,640 middle-aged Hungarians found that those who felt their lives had meaning had significantly lower rates of cancer and heart disease.
The importance of having some sort of purpose to your life has often been highlighted in this blog. Basically it means finding a meaningful reason to get out of bed in the morning. The two most fatally dangerous years of your life are the year you were born and the year you retire. Losing an everyday purpose goes beyond mental well being. Today numerous studies are connecting mental health, particularly stress, with physiological symptoms and diseases. A lack of purpose is similar, a mental issue that can have seriously adverse effects on your body.

Luckily for us, Dan Buettner has provided 9 tips for finding purpose with a very long life.
1) Move naturally -- be active without thinking about it. Identify activities you enjoy and make them a part of your day.
* Inconvenience yourself: ditch the remote, the garage door opener, the leaf-blower; buy a bike, broom, rake, and snow shovel.
* Have fun, be active. Ride a bike instead of driving, for example.
* Walk! Nearly all the centenarians we've talked to take a walk every day.
2) Cut calories by 20 percent. Practice "Hara hachi bi," the Okinawan reminder to stop eating once their stomachs are 80 percent full. Also make sure you have a good Diet and Exercise
* Serve yourself, put the food away, then eat.
* Use smaller plates, bowls, and glasses.
* Sit and eat, not in the car or standing in front of the fridge.
3) Plant-based diet. No, you don't need to become a vegetarian, but do bump up your intake of fruits and veggies.
* Use beans, rice or tofu as the anchor to your meals.
* Eat nuts! Have a 2-ounce handful of nuts daily (it'll stop you from digging in the chip bag).
4) Drink red wine (in moderation)
* Keep a bottle of red wine near your dinner table.
* Keep the daily intake to two servings or less.
5) Plan de Vida: determine your life purpose. Why do you get up in the morning?
* Write your own personal mission statement.
* Take up a new challenge, learn a language or an instrument.
6) Down shift -- take time to relieve stress. You may have to literally schedule it into your day, but relaxation is key.
* Don't rush - plan on being 15 minutes early.
* Cut out the noise - limit time spent with the television, computer, or radio on.
7) Belong / participate in a spiritual community.
* Deepen your existing spiritual commitment.
* Seek out a new spiritual or religious tradition.
8) Put loved ones first / make family a priority.
* Establish family rituals (game night, family walks, Sunday dinners).
* Show it off: create a place for family pictures and souvenirs that shows how you're all connected.
* Get closer: consider downsizing to a smaller home to promote togetherness.
9) Pick the right tribe -- the people surrounding you influence your health more than almost any other factor. Be surrounded by those who share Blue Zone values.
* Identify your inner circle. Reconsider ties to people who bring you down.
* Be likable!
